Do you agree or disagree with McLuhan when he defines comics as an extension of photographic media?

In the article Understanding Media: The Extension of Man, McLuhan talks about the different types of media and and how the medium is the message. He makes 2 categories of media: hot and cool. Hot media does not involve any effort from the viewer taking in the media because the media enhances one’s senses, and therefore is very easy to take in. An example of this media is a movie because you can simply sit back and let the movie do all the explaining of what is going on. Cool media on the other hand does require the viewer to pay attention to fully understand the message of the medium. An example of this is comics as the reader must read along and make sense of the segments together to understand the story.

Yes I do agree with McLuhan when he defines comics as an extension of photographic media as they are very similar mediums and also both cool. It is the photographic images in a comic that the reader must pay attention too and think about to make sense of the story which make comics a cool medium. As there is not a whole lot of dialogue in comics, they probably would not make sense without the photographic medium involved making it an extension of photographic media. Therefore comics are an extension of photographic medium because comics would not be the same medium that it is without the photographic element of it.
